The thing is, we have two very different animals lumped together as "parties". One is a political organization with ideas (right and wrong) about what is best for the country considered as a whole: one country, one tribe.
The other rejects the identity between America and Americans. They have no opinion whatsoever as to what's best for the country as a whole. They are a collection of overlapping tribes seeking to win a zero sum game against competing tribes.
Citizens United affects these two groups very differently. Especially as the Internet allows for democratic mass small donations.
