The first step in a leadership fight is to get your delegation behind you. When a party is national in scope, this favors Californians, New Yorkers, and Illinoisans, eg, Pelosi, Schumer, Durbin, Crowley, Sanchez.
In the GOP, McCarthy has a big advantage with 13 other GOP members in his California delegation. There’s only 7 states with 14 members total, let alone of one party!
But California won’t send 14 Republicans to Congress in 2019. More like 7. Look for Democrats to make big gains as well in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Florida and New York, with battle fronts opening up in the new population centers around Atlanta and Raleigh-Durham and Southwestern states like Arizona and Colorado.
At that point, the GOP will cease to be a truly national party, looking more and more like a regional rump restricted to the South and Northern Plains.
That’s the party that Steve Scalise will lead: a shooting survivor advocating for more guns, leading a raucous cabal. There will be no more “Freedom Caucus” because it will be renamed The Republican Party.
What kind of rhetoric do you suppose will come out of a party purged of non-racists? That’s a recipe for a death spiral and a party going the way of the Whigs.
